Cholesterol incorporation into bacterial membranes.
نویسنده
چکیده
The wall-covered bacteria Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Bacillus megaterium, and Proteus mirabilis incorporated exogenous cholesterol into their cytoplasmic membrane in quantities resembling those incorporated by sterol-nonrequiring mycoplasmas. Cholesterol incorporation into the outer membrane of P. mirabilis was much more restricted than into the cytoplasmic membrane.

Receptor-Independent Interaction of Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide with Lipid and Lymphocyte Membranes; the Role of Cholesterol
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a major constituent of bacterial outer membranes where it makes up the bulk of the outer leaflet and plays a key role as determinant of bacterial interactions with the host. Membrane-free LPS is known to activate T-lymphocytes through interactions with Toll-like receptor 4 via multiprotein complexes. In the present study, we investigate the role of cholesterol and me...
متن کاملCholesteryl ester transfer between high density lipoprotein and phospholipid bilayers.
High density lipoprotein-associated cholesteryl esters (HDL CE) are taken up by many cells without parallel uptake of HDL apoproteins, a pathway we have termed "selective uptake." The first step in this pathway, the reversible incorporation of HDL CE into the plasma membrane, is the subject of the present study. To examine the role of membrane proteins, the rate of HDL CE incorporation into iso...
متن کاملPhospholipid Metabolism in Intact and Modified Erythrocyte Membranes
Erythrocyte membranes incorporated labeled phosphate from gamma-adenosine triphosphate (AT(32)P) into phosphatidic acid and the polyphosphoinositides. Inositol-(3)H and palmitate-(14)C were also incorporated into the phospholipids but alpha-glycerophosphate-(32)P was not. The incorporation of gamma-AT(32)P into phospholipids was increased when the erythrocyte ghosts were incubated in hypotonic ...
متن کاملBasis for selectivity of cationic antimicrobial peptides for bacterial versus mammalian membranes.
Novel cationic antimicrobial peptides typified by structures such as KKKKKKAAXAAWAAXAA-NH2, where X = Phe/Trp, and several of their analogues display high activity against a variety of bacteria but exhibit no hemolytic activity even at high dose levels in mammalian erythrocytes. To elucidate their mechanism of action and source of selectivity for bacterial membranes, phospholipid mixtures mimic...
متن کاملSterol synthesis by the ocular lens of the rat during postnatal development.
Great amounts of plasma membranes are formed during early postnatal development of the ocular lens as lens epithelial cells differentiate into fiber cells. Little information is available on the source of the lipids, and particularly cholesterol, required for formation of these plasma membranes. The present study measured the capacity of the lens of the rat to synthesize cholesterol during this...
